Black-owned tech firm introduces new app to save hospitality industry
A team of black developers have launched a new app that helps connect event producers to new customers and that helps event-goers discover local events.
StayontheGO, an app that enables users to view event ads, share events, like events, and post their own events conveniently on an instagram-like feed, is currently only available on iOS and can be downloaded in the app store. The Android version of the app will be released later in the fall.
“There is a lot going on that people just don’t know about, explained Shawn Crawford, the company’s CEO. “The really cool events, you never really even hear about til after they happen. Platforms like Facebook and Eventbrite are hard to filter through and show limited event information. Meanwhile, our app focuses strictly on events.”
With coronavirus closing businesses and bringing the events and hospitality industry almost to a halt, the team is hoping the app will bring customers back out as restrictions lessen by providing better access to event information in the local community around them.
Once users download the app, they can create a profile to browse and/or post events. The user-friendly platform is easily navigable and enables users to sync events they plan to attend with their preferred calendar app on their devices.
“We have 15 or so more features already planned that we will be adding to the app, but we wanted to start with the basic functions; which is, view an event, post an event, share an event,” said A.D. Slaton, the company’s CTO and chief engineer. “We felt that would add a lot of value all by itself. During our beta stage, we hope to figure out what matters to our users the most.”
StayontheGO is the latest product created by Lean Concepts, a technology company founded by two black developers and Atlanta natives, Shawn Crawford and A.D. Slaton. The duo began working on the app in 2018 after meeting at a weekly tech community meetup hosted at a co-working space owned by Crawford on Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, GA.
The company will be hosting beta launch events in Atlanta, Nashville and L.A., to introduce users to the product and to get real-time feedback as to features users would like to see created as the app evolves.
